Stop Unnecessary Barriers to Voting
The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) is considering a new rule that could block millions of US citizens from registering to vote. Submit a public comment now – it only takes a few minutes!
In Brief
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Activists are petitioning the EAC to change federal registration rules. If they're successful, American citizens would be forced to show specific documents (like passports) when registering to vote.
WHY IT MATTERS
Federal law already requires voters to verify their identity and US citizenship when registering. This rule would only make the registration process more complicated and expensive. But these requirements are more than just unnecessary. They would also shut out millions of eligible voters who cannot easily access their documents. A Florida drivers license would not qualify as proof of citizenship!

A Florida drivers license is a Real ID, which proves legal residency.
It does not prove citizenship.

- I am against the requirement to submit a passport or other proof of citizenship to vote.
- This rule could stop millions of Americans from voting. Don't do it!
- This rule would create more problems than it solves.
- I have been voting for years. I consider it my duty. I have a passport, but I have family members who do not - including my daughter. It would be a hassle and costly for her to prove her name changed because of marriage.
- The SAVE Act, which passed the U.S. House, has this same provision. The Senate has not passed this bill. A federal agency should not do an end run around Congress.
